Getting ready to plant

I have been starting to pull everything together, I bought ,my seeds, a bag of starting mix, a T8 light kit, and have collected my TP rolls, a tip I picked up in a book titled One Magic Square, which I really enjoyed reading and learned a lot from. I just haven't decided when to start planting maybe end of Feb or early March, not really sure yet

Hellow SouthCoast Guy! And thanks for reaching out. Can't imagine trying to grow anything in that snowbank you call a home, but then again, you do get four complete seasons, don't you? I would not whack that three year old apple tree. It's already off to a good start. What you can do, however, is start grafting other apple varieties onto it. There was a time when half of all grafts failed. But ever since the male-female graft practice was adopted (think of plugging in a lamp), the success rate has soared to over 90% I have peach trees that I will start grafting too in the next year or three. As for the Backyard Orchard Culture concept, I suggest you read up on it first, before attempting. Just Google Backyard Orchard Culture -- and the explanation plus instructions -- will come up for you. Best of luck!

Thanks for visiting Bill, We do have 4 seasons although sometimes it feels like some last a lot longer than others. The apple tree I planted has 4 varieties of apples and is supposed to be self pollinating so I don't think grafting will be beneficial to this specific tree? I haven't had any fruit yet so at this point I am just going off of the plant tag

Looks like you will have lots growing there this year. We're trying to create a bigger vegetable garden space this year and starting a lot of them from seed. I plan to start some seeds this weekend. Good luck with yours, looking forward to seeing what you decide to grow.

Oh -- you've merely scratched the grafting surface my friend. You can start grafts on grafts. I know of people who have anywhere from 40-50 fruit trees planted -- yet those trees offer 500 different varieties of fruit. Your tree is three years old and it has yet to set ONE apple? Or are you pulling them off (some people do)? If you're not getting fruit -- something ain't right. You've either got a pollination problem somewhere, OR you are getting fruit and just don't realize it because some garden critter has already made off with it (happens all the time). If you don't see the tree setting any fruit in Year 4 -- time to find out why.

Not one apple yet, last spring I walked out to the tree one day and it was infested with caterpillars, I dusted it with a pesticide (seven), which I now wish I didn't, wish I had used something organic. After that the tree didn’t produce anything. I posted some pics of the tree and the tag
